What clothing should I wear to ride a horse?
Long pants that go all the way down to your ankles should be worn to ride. Leggings or jeans are a good choice but try to avoid flared or bell-bottom jeans. A long sleeve or T-shirt can be worn and we prefer it be somewhat form-fitting so we can see your body position better when teaching. Please no tank tops or low cut shirts. Until you purchase riding boots, we ask that you wear a hiking boot or a boot with a very low heel.
Do you have equipment I can borrow?
Yes. We have all the neccessary tack for the horse. We provide a selection of approved helmets, riding gloves, crops and other equipment you may need.
Are there age limits or weight restrictions?
We begin lessons as early as 5 years old and have no age restriction beyond that. We prefer to limit our horses to carrying 250lbs.
When should I buy my own riding tack and apparel?
We suggest buying your own equipment and apparel as soon as you feel comfortable with riding and know you will stick with it. It is always better to have your own equipment and proper riding clothes to ensure maximum comfort and fit. If you are thinking about making any purchases, we are happy to help find what you need and the good deals!
What does "tacking up" and "untacking" consist of?
If you choose to take a lesson with us where you "tack" and "untack" the horse, you will learn everything from getting the horse out of his/her stall all the way to putting him/her back home after your lesson.
This often includes: Learning how to lead a horse, brush, "pick" their feet (remove all debris from in their hooves), comb and put all "tack" (leg wraps, bridle, saddle etc.) on them. Mount, have your 45 minute lesson and then learn how to untack the horse, give a bath or shower if needed, clean them up, lead them home, put their blanket on if neccessary and clean the bridle that was used.
